Anthony Burns The Defeat and Triumph of A Fugitive Slave (pg 122-186)

Summary: So its the end of the exiting story of Anthony Burns. Many people wanted to like cut the whole case completely. One of the many people who wanted to stop the case was Anthony's junior council Charles Ellis. He wanted to stop it because he didn't think it was right that they went on with the case when Anthony is sitting in shackles, the courtroom is filled with armed men, and the friends of Anthony cant even see him because the streets were like blocked off. But the case proceeded. The court case went on for hours. The case went on again on that Wednesday. By that Thursday everyone believed that Anthony would be able to go free because the judge would judge in his favor. Now it seemed that everyone was on Anthony instead of Suttle's side. After all that trouble Anthony was sent back to Virginia. But instead of Anthony's lawyers forgetting about him they decided that they would try again soon to get him free. Because this was such a disappointment to so many people it caused those hundreds of people to mourn on the fact that Anthony was going back to slavery. So Anthony went back to slavery his owner was kinder than his last. This time his owner soled him to freedom basically because he knew they would free him in the south. So in the end Anthony died as a symbol for freedom for many and a free man.

Quote: " Anthony had died only twenty eight years old. And yet he had lived a life that would have overwhelmed most men"(Hamilton174).

Reaction: This quote is basically saying that even though this accrued many years ago even people from today would not have been able to put up with what Anthony burns did in his short life. Even people back then couldn't believe that he had done so much in so little time in his life. He made a difference in many peoples lives without even realizing it at first. What he did was amazing.

Anthony Burns The defeat and Triumph of a fugitive slave(pg 90- 122)

Summary: So after Anthony went through all he had went through he dozed off as he does to that place were he is a kid again. This time when he dozed off he ended up getting so into it that he actually forgotten were he was he had thought he was in forest, but he was actually on his bed in the court house bench in the jury room. This was actually his jail. While he was in his jail there was a loud ca motion going on outside when he went to see what was going on it was like a gang of people attacking the Court House to get in. The large gang of people had axes, battering rams, bats, etc. The leaders of the groups were screaming and shouting "Rescue him! Bring him out! Were is he?" These people were actually trying to free Anthony because they were standing up for what they believed in.

Quote: " Very early in the morning,a crowd once again gathered around the Court House. Composed of those for and against slavery, it was seething with anger and rumor (Hamilton 93)".

Reaction: This quote is important to the story because it gives evidence that people actually believed in Anthony once again and didn't just give up on him or just stopped caring. No, people actually cared it was a really big deal to them.I feel that Anthony kid of needed that support from the people even though there was people that were all for slavery. There was still many who were against it an were willing to fight for what they wanted. I feel that Anthony realized that a lot of people were willing to stand up for him and what he was doing, and I think he needed to know that.

Anthony Burns-The defeat and Triumph of A Fugitive Slave (pgs 65-90)

Summary: So now that Anthony has gotten extra days to think over what he wants to decide to do, on that Friday Richard Dana tried to make it so that Anthony could be released from jail up until that Saturday, which was when he had to go back to court. The bad thing about this was that the Commissioner refused to give Anthony this privilege and told him no. There Commissioner did this because he thought that there was no use because Anthony would end up going back with Mr.Suttle back to were he came from. Apparently it wasn't only the Commissioner thought this way it was also Edward Loring who was o Suttle's side of the case. When Anthony went to Court on that Saturday at Faneuil Hall it was over filling with people. There were more than 2,000 people in the audience. Most ready to support Anthony in whatever his decision was.

Quote: "The call to duty and honor had gone out, and Freedom lovers from all over New England had responded" (Hamilton 74).

Reaction: This quote is important to the story because it shows how many people actually cared about what was happening to Anthony. How many people actually thought that Anthony could make a change in the way life was by standing up for what they all believed in, freedom for all.It showed how many people were actually ready to stand up for their rights and what they wanted in life.

Anthony Burns-The defeat and Triumph of a Fugitive Slave (pgs. 42-65)

Summary: So after Anthony wad caught and put into jail he had to be put to trial. This was because it was a right were he had ran away that even blacks get fair trials. When he is brought to the court he doesn't know what to do. He doesn't know whether to go against his old master Mr.Suttle and try to keep his freedom or if he should just go back to his master and just live with the consequences.Anthony is highly confused and just can not make up his mind so the judge decided to let Anthony have another week to decide what he wanted to do whether it was to just give up or to actually try and be free. As the days went by one night Anthony became a symbol of hope for many people. It actually came to the point that Mr.Suttle was being watched and fallowed by many black men. He became so scared that the men were going to lynch him that he actually hired body guards.

Quote: "A man was stolen Last Night By the Fugitive Slave Bill Commissioner He will have His MOCK TRIAL On Saturday on May,27 in the Kidnappers Court Before the Honorable Slave Commissioner At the Court House in Court Square Shall Boston Stael Another Man?"(Hamilton 55).

Reaction: This quote is important to this story because this is a leaflet that showed that people were actually believed in what was going on was wrong and not fair. People actually got more hope for freedom by believing that Anthony was a chance for more people could get freedom.

Anthony Burns-The defeat and Triumph of a Fugitive Slave (pages 1-42)

Summery: In the expodition of Anthony Burns a slave named Anthony rus away from Virginia to Boston. Anthony does not stay free for very long. Because of the Fugitive slave Act that stated that a run away slave can be captured in any free state Burns is captured and put into prision. When this happens and Burns is picked up by the police he goes into his own world, the world when he was still a child, he looks back on his childhood when he was about seven. Burns talks about his mother and whole family being slaves on a man called John Suttle land. He talks about how he was treated differently from the other slaves because he was lighter than them. He even gets special treated, he doesnt have to work all day like they do, he doesnt work at all.By the time Anthony comes back to reality he is in prison waiting to go to court.

Quote: " Yays-surah, they yo' slaves. They my slaves, too"(Hamiliton 16).

Reaction:The quote is Anthony saying that he thinks if everyone is John Suttle's slaves then they are his slaves as well. This quote is important to the book because it shows just how little or how much Anthony actually knew about slavery and what was going on around him. This quote made me feel that Anthony was traeted very special compared to the actual slaves so he felt that he could say that kind of thing to John Suttle and it would be ok. But in reality it wasn't.
