Anthony Burns The Defeat and Triumph of A Fugitive Slave (pg 122-186)

Summary: So its the end of the exiting story of Anthony Burns. Many people wanted to like cut the whole case completely. One of the many people who wanted to stop the case was Anthony's junior council Charles Ellis. He wanted to stop it because he didn't think it was right that they went on with the case when Anthony is sitting in shackles, the courtroom is filled with armed men, and the friends of Anthony cant even see him because the streets were like blocked off. But the case proceeded. The court case went on for hours. The case went on again on that Wednesday. By that Thursday everyone believed that Anthony would be able to go free because the judge would judge in his favor. Now it seemed that everyone was on Anthony instead of Suttle's side. After all that trouble Anthony was sent back to Virginia. But instead of Anthony's lawyers forgetting about him they decided that they would try again soon to get him free. Because this was such a disappointment to so many people it caused those hundreds of people to mourn on the fact that Anthony was going back to slavery. So Anthony went back to slavery his owner was kinder than his last. This time his owner soled him to freedom basically because he knew they would free him in the south. So in the end Anthony died as a symbol for freedom for many and a free man.

Quote: " Anthony had died only twenty eight years old. And yet he had lived a life that would have overwhelmed most men"(Hamilton174).

Reaction: This quote is basically saying that even though this accrued many years ago even people from today would not have been able to put up with what Anthony burns did in his short life. Even people back then couldn't believe that he had done so much in so little time in his life. He made a difference in many peoples lives without even realizing it at first. What he did was amazing.
