Parrot In The Oven-Mo Vida (pages 49-109)

Summary:In this book not much has happened since I've last read. One of the many things that has happened is the pop up of the understanding of the books title. On page 51 through 52. This is when Manuel's father is in a bar for a few days and his mom is finally fed up with it. So she says basically if their father doesn't come home no one eats. So Manuel and his mother go to the bar to pick him up. They find him hiding in a bathroom stall. When he comes out with their mother you can tell that he has been put down but is still trying to act strong. When he comes back to the bar counter he sees Manuel and calls him a parrot from a Mexican saying about a parrot who complains how hot it is in the shade when all along he is in an oven.

Quote: "Dad didn't say it because he thought I was dumb, but because I trusted everything to much, because I'd go right into the oven trusting people all the way- brains or no brains"(Martinez52).

Reaction: I liked how Manuel knew that his father didn't call him parrot because he was ignorant or naive. I liked how he called him parrot for his own reasons. This quote shows that he didn't have to take being called a parrot an insult and that he trusted his father as well.
